Section 60 approval status

From 1 July 2022, the Regulatory and assurance framework for local water utilities PDF, 1100.53 KB applies to local water utilities in regional NSW.

The new approach to assessment and approvals of works (under section 60 of the Local Government Act 1993 or section 292(1) of the Water Management Act 2000) is fully implemented from 1 July 2022.

Under Section 60 of the Local Government Act 1993, local water utilities are required to obtain Ministerial approval for the construction or modification of water or sewage treatment works.

The department routinely publishes recent Section 60 approvals. A register of recent approvals can be found below.

Projects that are marked as:

  • Approved: mean the department has assessed and provided approval of the project under section 60 of the Local Government Act 1993 or section 292 of the Water Management Act 2000
  • In Pipeline: mean the project is at the development stage and has not reached the section 60 or section 292 approval stage or approval has not been granted yet.

* This register is based on information provided to the department by Local Water Utilities, including through applications for regulatory (under s60 of the Local Government Act and s292 of the Water Management Act) approval and applications for co-funding of projects under various programs.

** This register may not represent all projects that will require such regulatory approval. If you are aware of additional projects that may require approval, or of more up to date information on projects, please contact section60@dpie.nsw.gov.au.
