The department is currently developing Water Quality and Salinity Management Plans for the water resource plan areas in NSW. The Basin Plan requires a water resource plan to include a water quality management plan which provides a framework to protect, enhance or restore water quality that is ‘fit for purpose’ for a range of uses.
These uses may include irrigation of crops, maintaining a healthy aquatic ecosystem, recreational use or cultural and spiritual links to Country for the Basin’s Aboriginal communities.
Water quality management plans consider the needs of all water users. DoI Water is working with key government agencies throughout the decision making process and will seek wider input through water resource plan consultation where required. The whole of government approach will foster collaboration and provide a strong focus on local and regional knowledge.
Technical reports for water quality and salinity have been prepared for each plan area.
