NSW River Condition Index

The River Condition Index is the primary long-term reporting tool for assessing change in riverine condition, for use in state of the environment reporting.

The index was developed using the Framework Assessment of River & Wetland Health (FARWH) approach which is based on a hierarchical model of river function. The FARWH recognises the effects of catchment disturbance, physical form of the landscape, hydrologic regime, water quality, fringing zone and aquatic biota as measures of river health. The FARWH is a method that uses existing data collection activities across Australia and converts them into a standarised and nationally comparable representation of river health.

A detailed technical manual explains the methods used to develop the NSW River Condition Index and other associated spatial products River Condition Index: method development & application.
