The Lachlan region is located in central NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range, and includes the major regional town centres of Cowra, Parkes, Forbes and Young.
The Lachlan is characterised by periods of drought and flood and it has a low level of drought security and flood management. The Lachlan is a priority regulated river catchment for critical water infrastructure and improved water management. WaterNSW is carrying out the Lachlan Water Security Investigations to assess potential options to address the needs of the catchment.
The regional water strategy for the Lachlan will include regulated and unregulated Lachlan River water sources, the regulated and unregulated Belubula River water sources, and the Lachlan alluvial water sources.
