NSW Small Businesses win big at National Awards

Media release | 8 April 2019

Minister for Small Business Damien Tudehope has congratulated NSW companies for scooping the pool by winning 31 out of 50 categories at the Australian Small Business Champion Awards.

Mr Tudehope said the weekend awards were a stellar moment for the state’s small business sector.

“Congratulations to all the NSW winners from these prestigious annual awards – you champions have done our state very proud,” Mr Tudehope said.

“The Australian Small Business Champion Awards are the pinnacle of small business success so to get 31 out of 50 NSW winners is a huge achievement.

“These Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of small businesses to our economy and great values including service, commitment, leadership, endurance, courage, innovation, and generosity.”

Mr Tudehope said NSW is winning on the small business front all round with Bureau of Statistics data showing close to 30,000 new businesses were created in the last financial year.

“Small business owners in NSW are the most successful in the country in starting new businesses,” he said.

“NSW is now home to more than 765,000 small businesses which is the largest number of small businesses this state has ever had.

“Our small businesses grew from 736,000 to almost 765,000 in the 12 months to June 2018 which was an increase of 4 per cent on the previous year.

“We also saw growth of 26,000 small businesses in NSW in 2016-17. Since 2014, NSW has seen net growth of 85,000 small businesses. These are fantastic results that show there is no better place than here to start a small business.”

Mr Tudehope said NSW’s small businesses employ about 1.59 million people – about 44% of the private sector workforce - and generate about $51.42 billion in annual wages and salaries.

“NSW small businesses, those employing 19 or fewer people, make up almost 98 per cent of all businesses in the State and are the heart and soul of our economy.

“The NSW Government is backing small businesses with initiatives like the award-winning Easy to do Business program and the Business Connect advisory service.

“The Office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner (OSBC) is rolling out our Faster Payments policy which will see the time taken to pay government bills of up to $1 million cut to just five days by the end of this year. This Australian first will boost small business cash flows.”
