$1.1 million secures a grandstand finish for Moree Race Club

The central grandstand at Moree Racecourse will be reinstated for public use after the NSW Government announced $1.1 million in funding under its COVID-19 stimulus program to address structural issues with the building.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said it as “brilliant news” for the Moree Race Club which has for years wanted to undertake a large-scale revamp of the 50-year-old racecourse grandstand.
“Horse racing has had a long and distinguished history in the region with the first Moree Cup held in 1881 and this $1.1 million stimulus funding will help continue that legacy,” Mr Marshall said.
“The current grandstand at Moree Racecourse has been restricted for some time, due to concrete cancer weakening the structure making it unsafe for large numbers of spectators.
“Preliminary engineering assessments have been conducted on the grandstand and more detailed assessments will now be undertaken with the use of the first tranche of this funding.
“These assessments will determine what repair work will be needed to rectify the situation or if a replacement grandstand would be more cost effective.”
$260,000 would be provided this financial year and $840,000 next financial year to allow for assessments and the repair or replacement of the racecourse’s grandstand facilities.
Moree Racecourse is a significant drawcard and focal point for the town and also other communities in the wider region that hold picnic race days at the course.
“This investment to restore a key piece of recreational infrastructure will provide a boost for the local turf club and the many residents who enjoy a great view of the action during a day at the races,” Mr Marshall said.
“Moree Racecourse is a considerable visitor drawcard for the North West, with its regular meets attracting hundreds of people to town.”
