NSW international students recognised for airport welcome desk work

New South Wales Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Treasurer Jonathan O’Dea attended an International Student Welcome Desk Ceremony at Parliament House on 30 May, acknowledging volunteers who have committed at least 20 hours of their time to welcome and assist new students arriving at Sydney Airport.
'The NSW Government believes it has a great responsibility to look after the more than 236,000 international students that come to study here every year, and, on behalf of the government, I want to say how appreciative I am for the commitment that you as volunteers have made to the Airport Welcome Desk program.'
'Your direct engagement with newly arrived students has wide-ranging implications for their time here; it not only ensures they have a positive first impression of NSW but it helps to make them feel welcome and more relaxed, putting them in the best frame of mind as they begin their studies,' Mr O’Dea said.
NSW Minister for Trade and Industry Niall Blair said NSW is by far Australia’s most popular study destination.
'This is why in 2017 the NSW Government increased its investment in international education through StudyNSW by 57%, from $4.7 million to $7.4 million over four years to 2021.
'Since its inception in 2015 the Airport Welcome Desk Program has been central to StudyNSW’s work to support international students – from the moment they first arrive at Sydney Airport we are sending a strong message to international students that NSW is the most welcoming place to live, learn, work and play.'
At the ceremony StudyNSW acknowledged the 73 students who completed 20 hours, 14 team leaders who completed an additional 30 hours, and four truly committed students who chose to complete 40 hours at the Welcome Desk, situated at Sydney International Airport.
