Nearly 60 finalists have been announced for the inaugural industry-backed Australian fintech awards with NSW-based fintech companies securing more than two thirds of finalist positions.

The ‘Finnie Awards’ are being conducted by FinTech Australia, the national association for the Australian fintech startup community, and are sponsored by the NSW Government-backed Jobs for NSW.

They will be held at a gala ceremony in Sydney on the night of 24 May with finalists selected from 158 award entries across 30 categories. Of the 58 finalists, 49 are companies and a further nine are individuals.

A total of 39 judges, including 16 from overseas, rated the different award entries to determine the 58 finalists.

“We were flooded with incredibly high quality entries for our awards - the judges had to make some difficult decisions to choose the finalists,” said FinTech Australia CEO Danielle Szetho.

“Not surprisingly, we received most interest for our FinTech Organisation of the Year and Emerging FinTech Organisation of the Year awards, given the prestige of these award categories. In some cases, a mere three points separated half a dozen finalists.

“Given this is the first time we’ve held the Finnies, we’re very excited with the response we received from the fintech community. We’re also enjoying using these awards to promote the great work and innovation of our fintech companies.”

John Barilaro Deputy Premier NSWNSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Small Business, John Barilaro, said he was delighted to hear that 39 of the 58 finalists for the inaugural Finnies awards - more than two thirds - were from NSW.

"NSW is at the heart of Australia’s financial services industry - home to 54 per cent of the nation's fintech sector - so to get 67 per cent of the Finnies finalists from NSW is a great achievement,” Mr Barilaro said.

"Congratulations to all the finalists and best of luck for the upcoming awards. The NSW Government, through Jobs for NSW, has provided $80,000 for a two year sponsorship of the Finnies in recognition of the value and jobs that the growing fintech industry brings to our economy."
