20 October 2015

The regional NSW town of Bathurst

The Department of Industry is using a major regional conference in Bathurst starting today to promote the economic strengths of regional NSW.

The annual Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) conference will be held at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst on 20-22 October.

The SEGRA conference attracts decision-makers from regional development organisations, local government, state and federal government, and academia to discuss how regional areas can identify opportunities and develop innovative strategies to ensure ongoing prosperity. The Department is one of the top sponsors of the conference.

Supporting regional NSW

NSW Department of Industry has a particular focus on regional NSW including an economic development strategy.

NSW remains the largest and most diverse regional economy in Australia, contributing $138 billion to the NSW economy. More jobs were created in regional NSW last financial year than in all of the other Australian states and territories combined.

About Bathurst

A farming community that became Australia's first inland settlement, Bathurst provides a good example of the economic diversity of regional NSW.

The town now boasts a thriving services sector, with education and training providers the biggest employers, as well as tourism among the industries that add to the vibrancy of the local economy.
