WestConnex is the largest transport infrastructure project in Australia, linking western and south western Sydney with the city, airport and port. The motorway will ease congestion, create jobs and connect communities.
The NSW Government has committed A$1.8 billion to commence the project. The Australian Government has committed A$1.5 billion over four years and provided a concessional loan of A$2 billion for the WestConnex M5 project. The loan will bring forward construction so the WestConnex M5 and M4 East will both open to traffic in 2019.Investigations are underway on potential northern and southern extensions to WestConnex with a report due for government in late 2014.
Scale: 33 kilometres continuous motorway, 3-4 lanes in each direction, including 19 kilometres of tunnels
Cost: Approximately A$14.9 billion
Timeframe: Three defined stages over 10 years with full project completion around 2023. The indicative timeframe for each of the stages are:
- Stage 1: M4 Widening construction is on schedule to start in 2015 and open in 2017.
- Stage 1: M4 East construction is expected to start in 2016 and open in 2019.
- Stage 2: M5 construction is due to start in 2015 and will open in 2019.
- Stage 3: M4 South design and construction is expected to commence in 2018 and be completed by 2023.
