Developing an export plan

After you've decided what you want to sell and where you want to sell it, creating a good plan is critical to setting and achieving your targets.

Write your export plan in simple language so it demonstrates how your business will be successful as well as how it will overcome challenges.

Know your potential market

Find out as much as possible about your industry, customers and competitors, as well as potential sales and costs.

Talk to peers who have already succeeded in this market and learn from their mistakes.

You also need to be sure that what you are offering will satisfy a local need.

Check your IP

Ensure you research  options to secure your intellectual property (IP) before you start approaching the market, as someone may already own the rights to your brand or idea.

If you are developing a joint venture, make sure it is clear who will own any intellectual property generated (preferably in the form of a written contract).
