Supporting defence jobs in the Hunter

The NSW Government has committed additional funding to train young people and equip them with the skills they need for employment in the Hunter’s booming defence industry. The Hunter already has the largest regional defence presence in NSW, with 4,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel.

The funding will create jobs in the Hunter region by developing a talent pool of employees with the skills to start work in industries such as defence, advanced manufacturing, engineering, resources, electronics and aerospace.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the funding for the innovative RDA Hunter STEMship program, which increases the take up of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. The funding will ensure that the defence industry continues to have a pool of workers with STEM skills.

As an alternative to university, the STEMship program will give secondary high school students a vocational education and training (VET) pathway into work. At the completion of the program, participants will have the opportunity to take up apprenticeships and traineeships.

Defence companies will continue to benefit from the program, which has been critical for developing their workforce.

The additional funding complements NSW: Strong, smart and connected, the NSW Government’s strategy for the ADF and defence industries. The strategy aims to grow jobs, investment and innovation in the industry, particularly in regional NSW.
