Gong Strikers win inaugural StudyNSW Sixers Smash competition

The Gong Strikers, a team of local and international students from the University of Wollongong plus local cricketers, has won the inaugural 2017/18 Sixers Smash competition supported by Sydney Sixers and StudyNSW.

The Sixers Smash final was held on Sunday 26 November at LM Graham Reserve in Manly.

StudyNSW, the NSW Government organisation that supports the international student sector, is investing in 10 partner projects across the State to improve the international student experience, including the Sixers Smash cricket tournament.

Cricket NSW received $55,000 in co-funding from StudyNSW as part of its partner project program to deliver the Sixers Smash – a series of five cricket events for international students in locations across NSW.

The winning teams that took part in the Sixers Smash competitions at the University of Wollongong (Gong Strikers), UNSW (Dothrakis), Macquarie University (Friends CC) and University of Newcastle (Lambton Swingers) took part in the final.

Each team played three games, with the top two teams competing in the grand final.

Sydney Sixers General Manager Dominic Remond said: “The Sixers Smash has been an exciting opportunity for international students to get their mates together and join in Australia’s favourite sport, one of summer’s favourite pastimes.

“We’ve also been delighted to offer a number of students the opportunity to intern with Cricket NSW and experience sports administration while studying at university.”

NSW Minister for Trade & Industry Niall Blair said StudyNSW was investing $358,000 in 10 partner projects across the State.

“With more than 267,000 international students enrolled in NSW it’s important we make each student feel welcome while studying here,” Mr Blair said.

Overall, 314 participants registered to take part in the Sixers Smash events, with over 75% being international students.

Over 45 cricket matches were played and 42 participants were given Sixers Membership passes.

Up to 20 students will take part in the internship program with Cricket NSW/Sydney Sixers.

Cricket NSW and Sydney Sixers will hold an induction day with student interns at the SCG on Tuesday 5 December and an SCG function during a ‘Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars’ match with the final teams and StudyNSW on Tuesday 23 January.
