Government response to Creative Industry Action Plan

Implementation of the government's priorities

The following key actions have been achieved towards implementing the government's priorities:

Creative Industries Trade Mission to China. A key priority for the Government is to stimulate trade in key overseas markets. From 28 May to 1 June 2014, NSW Trade & Investment led a delegation to the China Beijing International Fair for Trade in Services to promote NSW Creative Industries in this  vital and significant market. With partners Screen NSW, Destination NSW, Australian Institute of Architects (NSW), the University of Technology Sydney, and the City of Sydney, NSW Creative Industries had a significant presence at this high profile international event.

NSW Creative Achievement Awards

The NSW Government launched the NSW Creative Achievement Awards in 2014 to recognise and reward outstanding achievements that help increase the global profile of the NSW creative industries. The 2015 winners were announced by the Minister for Industry on 25 May during Vivid Sydney. The 2015 NSW Creative Laureate is the 2015 Ambassador for NSW creative industries.

Nurturing Aboriginal talent

In May 2014, the government announced new funding of $65,000 towards a project being developed by APRA AMCOS to help nurture Aboriginal musical talent, particularly in regional NSW. This support will provide mentoring to help indigenous artists achieve mainstream success.

Small Biz Connect diagnostic system

In May 2013, the government launched its Small Biz Diagnostic System to help provide tailored, high quality personalised advice to small business, including NSW creative businesses. In direct response to the Creative Industries Action Plan, this has included development of a 'design thinking for small  business health check'. It assists small business owners to assess their business processes through design-led solutions to help position themselves for increased competitiveness. The Design Thinking for Small Business health check was launched in January 2014.

Creative Industries Business Advisor

The Government announced the engagement of its first specialist Creative Industries Business Advisor as part of its Small Biz Connect program. The Taskforce recommended the provision of tailored advisory services to support the development of business capabilities in the creative industries, of which the vast majority of organisations are small in size. The advisor, who commenced in September 2013, was initially engaged as part of a 12 month pilot to provide tailored, face-to-face support and to build a case for the need for this service moving into the future. Due to the success of the pilot, the specialist Creative Industries Business Advisor is now an ongoing part of the Small Biz Connect program.

Creative clients in the Sydney central region have welcomed the specialist creative resource, with issues centring on business planning, marketing, succession planning, legal, banking and finance issues. Small businesses, in both creative and other industries in NSW, can access the support of local business experts by calling 1300 134 359 or visit find an advisor and using the postcode locator tool.

Creative Digital Knowledge Hub

The government has supported the establishment of an industry-led Knowledge Hub for Creative Digital to boost industry competitiveness through access to world leading information and research, information sharing and collaboration. The Hub was launched in November 2014, and is led by the University of Technology, Sydney.

Design thinking approaches

The government has trialled and implemented 'design thinking' approaches in developing government policy and programs, at the Public Service Commission, in the Office of Local Government and at TAFE NSW.

Premier's NSW Export Awards

Premier's NSW Export Awards, a priority for the government has been to leverage export successes. The government established a new creative industries category under the Premier's Export Awards.

Digitising collections of the State's cultural institutions

The State's cultural institutions have continued to digitise their collections. The NSW Government is contributing $32.6 million over the four years since 2011-12 to help fast-track the State Library of NSW's major digitisation program and to upgrade its digital infrastructure to support user interface functionality. Digitisation efforts will ensure that important cultural resources are generally available, and support study, research and provide inspiration for further creativity and innovation.

NSW creative industries economic profile

In June 2013, the department released the NSW creative industries economic profile, a statistical overview of the creative industries based on 2011 Census data.
