Penny Evans is a contemporary Indigenous Australian ceramics and mixed media artist based in Lismore, NSW, whose design incorporates her Kamilaroi cultural heritage in a unique and evolutionary style.

Penny Evans creates unique, contemporary Indigenous ceramics and mixed media art. Her work has been recognised by a number of awards including the Parliament of NSW, Aboriginal Art Professional Development Award 2009.

The design work on her ceramic pieces references Penny’s Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) cultural heritage as well as a ‘retro’ style influenced by the ‘aboriginalia’ souvenir ceramics of the 1950’s & 60’s, combined with her ever evolving graphic style.
Her ceramic artworks are thrown, pinched and coil built, using raku, terracotta and white earthenware clay bodies.

After each piece is created it is decorated using slips, under glazes and glazes combined with sgraffito and carving.

The technique of sgraffito is a strong feature of her wares and links to the Kamilaroi tradition of carving into trees, weapons and utensils as well as ground carving for ceremonial purposes, communications and storytelling.
