Catering business supported to start under the National Disability Insurance Scheme

Fei Sun has been in the catering business for more than 10 years. She runs coffee shops in Schofields and Jordan Springs and the business also has a food delivery service side.

With more new competitors entering the catering industry, it is challenging for Fei to retain old clients and find new ones for her food delivery service. After she saw a promotion for Business Connect on social media platform WeChat, Fei booked one Business Bus Session with Business Connect multicultural advisor (Chinese) Michael Xie.

After this session, Fei saw the value of the Business Connect multicultural program and received regular advice from Michael about running her business. Michael also discussed business goals with Fei and introduced her to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Michael guided Fei through the registration process to become an NDIS provider.

‘Despite Fei having a big family and several shops to look after, she’s always willing to use her spare time to learn new things, such as new ideas or new ways of management,’ Michael said.

In March 2018, Fei successfully registered a PRODA (Provider Digital Access) account through the My Place provider portal. With Michael’s help, all the related documents have been completed and signed. Fei Sun became the first catering and food delivery service business owner with a Chinese background to register as an NDIS provider.

‘The biggest advantage of using the Business Connect service was the connections made between my business to the government programs,’ Fei said. ‘Small business owners can sometimes get lost and not understand a lot of programs that are meant to help us. Michael broke that information down for me and helped us with the processes. It saved us a lot of time and energy.’

‘Now business is going well. We not only service Australian catering but we now also cater for the Chinese market and help other cafés with orders.’
