NSW Trade & Investment Hunter office took full advantage of Newcastle's hosting of four AFC Asian Cup football matches during January to generate new business relationships.
By the end of the competition, national teams from Japan, UAE, Iraq, Palestine, Oman, Kuwait and Australia's own Socceroos will have all played at Newcastle Stadium. Leveraging off the major tournament, NSW Trade & Investment organised business matching events with the support of Match Australia, Austrade's International Sports Business Program.
Japanese business representatives were introduced to representatives from Hunter companies at the Japan vs Palestine match. A similar business matching event was held for the Oman vs Kuwait match, supported by the Arab Australia Chamber of Commerce Sydney Chapter. For the 3rd vs 4th playoff on 30 January between UAE and Iraq, another business matching event will be held in partnership with HunterNet where important business contacts will be made and strengthened.
Business matching events provide an opportunity to connect relevant companies and create valuable business leads. A number of follow-up meetings have already taken place.
The Newcastle Trade & Investment office also created a USB card promoting the Hunter region with more than 100 media releases, 100 photos, DVDs, information sheets and links to further information about the competitive advantages and capabilities of the Hunter region.
The USB cards were distributed through the Local Organising Committee Media Unit to Australian and international journalists covering the tournament in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.
AFC Asian Cup is Asia's equivalent of the Euro Championships and is the biggest sporting event in Australia for more than ten years.
