The business of beauty

Thi Mai Lan Hoang in Lan Beauty & Nail Salon

Here at Business Connect, we want business owners to grab an opportunity with two hands and let us help them navigate the unknown. A great example of a business owner following their dreams is beauty therapist, Ms Thi Mai Lan Hoang (Lan).

In 2015, while visiting Beverley Hills, Lan saw a shop for lease and instantly fell in love with the location. She signed a lease straight away but was unsure on where and how to begin.

Lan began to panic about what she’d signed up for until she found a Business Connect ‘start a business’ workshop and booked in immediately.

“Once she attended the workshop she realised the enormity of her decision,” said local Business Connect advisor, Katherine Blizard. “So coming to the ‘start a business’ workshop made her realise she needed a plan.”

Katherine and Lan worked together to create a business plan and refined Lan Beauty & Nail Salon’s offering. They also worked out a marketing plan, identified competition and narrowed down the clientele. After the workshop ended, Lan felt better prepared to open the shop and with Katherine’s support, began trading.

“The whole experience was a big learning curve for Lan. Luckily she is a perfectionist by nature – her attention to detail is spot on so she does everything really well. She is a dream client – always listens and is keen to learn.

Over the last couple of years she’s also developed her range of products and offerings and adapted them based around her growing audience.”

Today, Lan runs a successful beauty salon and was recently a finalist at the St George Local Business Awards.
