Electricity service and installation rules

The Service and Installation Rules for NSW cover the requirements of electricity distributors for the connection of installations to the electricity distribution network. The Rules are used by electricians and accredited service providers.

The former Department of Water and Energy was the convener of a working group made up of utility and industry stakeholders which produced the October 2006 edition of the Rules and has now produced a revised January 2009 edition.

The Rules are incorporated by reference in the Code of Practice - Service and Installation Rules for NSW:

  • Section 1: General requirements (PDF 1.5MB)
  • Section 2: Underground services (PDF 979KB)
  • Section 3: Overhead services (PDF 743KB)

Please note these documents published by a predecessor agency represent the most current information on this topic. If you require assistance to access this publication, email Communications.

Printed copies of the Rules are available from electrical wholesalers and the National Electrical and Communications Association for members.

The working group will continue to meet regularly to review the document and issue amendments where necessary. Please refer queries about the Rules or their interpretation to the local electricity distributor.
